As many people in Kentucky and the rest of the country try to cut back on spending, it is becoming more common for people to skip their daily trips to coffee shops. Instead, home brewing has become much more common, and there are many new products on the market that promise to turn an average person into a barista.
In fact, these products have made it possible to brew a single drink with the press of a button. However, it was recently announced that over 1.7 million single cup coffee brewers and another 4 million espresso coffee pads were recalled after being deemed dangerous products, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported.
The recalled coffee brewers and espresso coffee pads were made by Tassimo and sold throughout the country and online between June 2008 and this month for $100-250.
More than 160 consumers reported burn injuries from the products. Dozens of consumers reported being sprayed with hot liquid and some said to have suffered severe burns, including a 2-year-old from Canada who suffered second-degree facial burns.
According to a statement on a consumer watchdog website, "[t]he plastic disc, or T Disc, that holds the coffee or tea can burst and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers using the brewer and onto bystanders, posing a burn hazard."
This bursting reportedly led to 140 reports of consumers being sprayed with hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves. The consumer watchdog website said that 37 consumers reported suffering second-degree burns from the product malfunction.
Kraft Foods is the maker of the Tassimo espresso T Discs, which are ground beans or leaves that are prepackaged in their own filter. Kraft issued a recall for about 2.1 million T Disc packages in the United States and another 1.9 million in Canada. The company said that the product can become clogged and spray hot liquid or coffee grounds, causing a burn risk.
